In this first talk, I will explain the classical equivalence between 2-dimensional topological quantum field theories and commutative Frobenius algebras, touching also to operads and props.

This minicourse will start with an introduction to higher categories, meaning both n-categories and (\infty,n)-categories. Then we will discuss their relevance to topological field theories via the Cobordism Hypothesis.
