The six vertex model exhibits limit shape and Arctic curve phenomena. It naturally extends the famous problem of domino tiling of an Aztec diamond (a discrete free-fermion problem) to the case of interacting fermions, albeit preserving exact solvability of the model. In the study of the model, numerous connections with random matrix theory emerge. In particular, various questions arise whose exact solutions, currently based on heuristics, wait for a rigorous treatment.
