Biography

Dr. Hofer received his Ph.D. from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, in 1981. After a position as lecturer at the University of Bath, he held professorships at Rutgers University, the Ruhr-Universtaet Bochum, and the ETH Zurich. In 1997 he joined the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University.

Dr. Hofer works in the fields of symplectic geometry, dynamical systems and partial differential equations. He is best known for the discovery of a remarkable geometry of symplectic diffeomorphism groups, meanwhile called Hofer's Geometry.

In 1998 he was a plenary lecturer at the International Congress in Berlin, and an invited speaker at the International Congress in Kyoto in 1990. He has been the recipient of a Sloan Fellowship and shared the 1999 Ostrowski Prize with A. Beilinson, Chicago. Dr. Hofer currently is the chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig, Germany. He is also one of the two managing editors of Inventiones mathematicae. Previously he also served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Banff International Research Station.

Dr. Hofer is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Academia Europaea.
